We Met Too Early

Some doubts arrive without warning, even in the happiest of love stories. For almost three years, she believed they were building a life that neither of them would ever want to leave. He was her best friend, her safe place, and the person she imagined beside her in every version of the future. Then, one ordinary night, he told her something she could not unhear. He loved her. He wanted a life with her. He could not imagine choosing anyone else. Yet somewhere beneath all that certainty lived a quiet question: had they found each other too soon? He wondered about the lives they might have lived apart, the people they might have become, the experiences they would never have. He said these thoughts had been with him for months. Until that night, she had never questioned the future they shared. Now, even their happiest memories carried a question they had never needed to ask before. Nothing had ended. Their plans remained, their tickets were bought, and the next few days were already waiting for them. But something had changed. She had always believed that meeting early meant having more time together. Now she wondered whether, to him, it meant missing out on everything else. And perhaps that was the cruelest part: he was still the person she wanted to grow old with, but for the first time, she no longer knew whether he was certain he wanted to grow old with her. They were still together. The future simply no longer belonged to them with the same certainty.

Some things never happened.
They still changed us.
